Herbal Supplements That Help Fight Hiv

Saturday, May 15th, 2010

AIDS has been around since the early 1980’s and now we have this new and terrible disease to a cure. As research continues into AZT therapy and antiretrovirals (since the immune system by an affected viral route AIDS),people continue to die from this disease.

Worldwide, an estimated 88.2 people with this disease have been infected. With such a large number it is essential that a solution be found.

There are some natural cures that seem to help.

Multiple vitamins have shown promise in several studies, focusing on early symptoms in patients. These studies looked at Vitamin B, C and E and their role in helping the immune system function better. Although these additions don’t cure the disease, it offers hope for AIDS patients, in that you could maintain a better quality of life in this battle.

Another new study that may keep your infection at bay is selenium. Selenium seems to “tame” the Virus while strengthening the immune system.

David Pauza at the Institute, of Virology in Baltimore recommended that patients add Selenium as an additional part of their daily vitamin supplements.

In a study at the University of Miami 262 patients were divided into two groups, one was given 200 micrograms of selenium daily and the control group was given a sugar pill or placebo. After 9 months the two groups had a significant difference which the selenium group reporting better health than the placebo group.

Natural Health Research Institute » Herbal COX-2 Inhibitors

Saturday, May 8th, 2010

By Gene Bruno, MS, MHS – Dean of Academics, Huntington College of Health Science

On September 30, 2004, the pharmaceutical giant Merck & Co., Inc. announced a voluntary worldwide withdrawal of VIOXX® (rofecoxib), its arthritis and acute pain COX-2 inhibitor medication. The company’s decision, was based on data from a new, three-year prospective, randomized, placebo-controlled clinical trial, which showed that after 18 months of use, VIOXX® increased relative risk for confirmed cardiovascular events, such as heart attack and stroke. Almost immediately commentary began about the potential for natural COX-2 inhibitors to fill the VIOXX® void.

It is the position of this author that natural COX-2 inhibitors may very well provide a viable alternative to VIOXX®. To understand why this might be so, let’s first discuss the COX-2 enzyme.

COX-2

There are two cyclo-oxygenase (COX) enzymes at work in our body, COX-1 and COX-2. The COX1 enzyme is expressed in most tissues, and is necessary for a variety of important internal functions. The COX-2 enzyme is also necessary for inflammation, a normal, healthy attempt by the body to heal itself. However, when inflammation gets out of control (such as in the case of arthritis, or other chronic inflammatory disorders) ongoing pain and discomfort is the result. That’s where botanical COX-2 inhibitors can help. Botanical COX-2 inhibitors block the action of the COX-2 enzyme, which helps reduce inflammation and pain.

DNA Microarrays In Herbal Drug Research | Pharmainfo.net

Friday, May 7th, 2010

By Ravi Kumar

Natural products are gaining increased applications in drug discovery and development. Being chemically diverse they are able to modulate several targets simultaneously in a complex system. Analysis of gene expression becomes necessary for better understanding of molecular mechanisms. Conventional strategies for expression profiling are optimized for single gene analysis. DNA microarrays serve as suitable high throughput tool for simultaneous analysis of multiple genes. Major practical applicability of DNA microarrays remains in DNA mutation and polymorphism analysis.

CGH micro array is most widely used technique to detect chromosomal amplification and deletions in cancer.

This review highlights applications of DNA microarrays in pharmacodynamics, pharmacogenomics, toxicogenomics and quality control of herbal drugs and extracts.
