Menopausal Sleep Problems

Saturday, February 13th, 2010

Women will often experience hot flashes and night sweats during menopause.

Frequently, these symptoms will interfere with a decent nights sleep, often for months on end. The hormone fluctuations of menopause and peri-menopause are a common cause of sleep problems and insomnia.

An estimated 75% of menopausal women suffer from hot flashes. The hot flashes can be mild to severe. Sometimes the hot flashes can be so severe, you feel as if you are burning up. This is called “steaming bones” in Chinese Medicine.

Hot flashes and night sweats respond very well to acupuncture and herbal formulas. I’ve treated quite a few woman with both, with just acupuncture and with just herbal medicines. All had noticeable and lasting improvement.

Herb Consults Is Now Live!

Saturday, February 13th, 2010

This new website, Herb Consults is an off shoot of my physical clinic. It gives you the opportunity to have an online herbal consultation with me without having to physically visit my clinic. When you decide that you want to utilize herbs for your health, you can find out what’s best to take for you and also what you should avoid.

Over the years, I’ve had many requests to continue care when a patient goes to another state or country. And I’ve been doing herbal consultations by phone and online by email with my patients for as long as I’ve been in Florida. We have a lot of ’snowbirds’ in Florida, that’s people that spend their winters here, and summers up north where it’s cooler.

When you call you are reaching my clinic “Blue Orchid Healing Center” & Herb Consults. Please leave me a message with your name, phone number and what you are calling about. During patient treatment hours, I often am not available, but will get back to you when I’m done seeing patients.

At Herb Consults you have the opportunity for online herbal consultations without having to physically visit my clinic. Where else can you get an in-depth evaluation of your health problems and determine the best herbal solutions?

Can You Treat Cancer With Herbs?

Friday, January 15th, 2010

Treating cancer with herbs is a question that I get asked a lot, so I will attempt to start addressing concerns here:

First of all, herbalists (& acupuncturists) don’t actually treat cancer, we treat the side-effects of Western medicine treatments for it.

Second, as Oriental Medicine Practitioners, we’re not allowed to say or claim that we treat cancer or cure it! As for myself, I have to testify to that for my malpractice insurance and there is some statement to that effect on our practice act here in Florida. I can only assume that it’s the same in other states.

Third, it’s my personal opinion that you should have a good medical workup if you have cancer by a qualified MD, surgeon, oncologist, and/ or radiologist. Only then can you make an informed decision on how you will deal with this diagnosis.

Now with that out of the way we can explore how herbs can help you when you have cancer.

Cancer treatments such as chemotherapy and radiation have fairly common side-effects. You might lose your hair. You may have nausea & vomiting. You may be easily fatigued and tired all the time with low energy. Your immunity is probably at an all time low. This is all from your cancer treatment.

Herbal medicines can help with all these side-effects:

  • decrease nausea and vomiting
  • improve your energy
  • decrease tiredness & fatigue
  • boost your immunity
  • help you sleep

Herbs & Herbal Formulas

I want you to be comfortable with your herbal treatment.

Remember herbs take a while to be effective. It does take from one to three months before you start experiencing positive changes and this depends on your age, how many health problems you have, and the severity of your health problem(s).

Instead of setting a predetermined price for your herbal needs, we’ll first determine what type or delivery system you feel you’ll be most comfortable and compliant with. Compliant means that you will take it as prescribed.

Please review this information because I will be asking you about your preference for your herbal treatment. There are several options for herbal formulas:

teapills

teapill bottles

Tea pills

Tea pills look like little black B B’s. Teapills are sugar coated to make them very easy to swallow. You can see a close up picture of the tiny teapills to the left.

You wind up taking a large number of the teapills. A typical dosage could be 12 teapills twice daily.

This option usually costs the least of all of the herbal formulas available.

tablets

Tablets

Tablets  may have slight variations in size, about ½ the size of the end of your little finger. Tablets are ground up herbs pressed into this shape.

Pros – Most tablets are easy to swallow. You take fewer in number than the tea pills. They may cost a little bit or a lot more than the tea pills depending on the formula.

Drawbacks are you may smell and taste the herbs but it’s not usually bad.

Traditional Chinese Medicine or TCM is the most comprehensive herbal system in existence!

Some scholars believe TCM has it’s roots from as far back as 10,000 years ago from writings found on shells and stone. These herbal therapies aren’t the latest thing to roll around and then fall out of favor in a few months. They’ve been around for centuries. So you know you can trust their effectiveness and don’t have to worry about side-effects.
